Milk Workshop in Lucerne, SWITZERLAND 12-13 October 2013

Hey everyone!

I am very pleased to announce this year’s last European edition of the Milk Workshop in Lucerne Switzerland in 12-13 October 2013.
Just before our departure to Australia!

Recently we received a very kind invitation from our friend Pirmin Zimmermann who has just opened his new Atelier in Lucerne and has asked us to run an opening show there.
I am very happy to do that as this will be our First Workshop in Switzerland!

This Premium Milk Workshop has a limited number of spots so if you would like to book your seat please Click Here for the Booking Page!
[ We now have just 9 left! ]

A full agenda can be found on the Workshop Details Page.
You will get chance to make your own liquid illustration exactly the same way we did in our recently awarded Black series:

.

It is a full Hands-On 2 day workshop!
Where the first day is open with an overview presentation, covering “know how”, tools, lighting and demo shoot and then later take over by the participants working with a two model. And the second day – all about the post production process!

.

It is also very exciting for me as we will shoot in Switzerland the last instalment for the MILKY PIN-UP Calendar 2014 !
We just need a ‘November Girl’ and the calendar will be done and available hopefully the following month!

.

P.S. Australia – Thank you to everyone who subscribed to the workshop newsletter! We are in the process of securing the studios in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and I will blog all the details in the next couple weeks.
If you would like to receive an advance notice about the booking the Australian Milk Workshop, please email us at workshops@aurumlight.com and we’ll get back to you when all details are confirmed.

Thank you and hopefully see you there
Jaroslav

AurumLight Beauty & Fashion Workshop with OlegTi

That was a great information packed weekend!
We worked in depth to understand and learn how to precisely control your light and make absolutely stunning portraits In-Camera without the need for Photoshop!

If you missed it, don’t worry as we will come back in that format in the future.

These were two separate events aimed to cover different material, focused on working with model and studio lighting.
The quality, direction, distance and power – you might think that these are basics but I assure you it is more important than you would expect.

Starting with simple yet effective, going through the complex, up to the creative and unique setups.
We worked with a hard light trying to avoid cutting corners with a “Big-Softbox-up-high-on-45-deg” scenario.

Most of the photos below were done with just Einsten heads equipped with a standard 8,5″ reflector additionally with ROSCO frosted, conversion or coloured gels.

Combine that with the Mixed Lighting Setup we presented some time ago, here on the blog and you unleash an unlimited creative application in both Beauty & Fashion genres.

Models: Jemma Jade Saare & Jay Jessop

All the best!
Jaroslav

Milky PinUps !

Today we have a few illustrations from our recent Workshops in London, Frankfurt and Los Angeles.
We had a great time with photographers from all over the world and now are gearing up for a really fantastic Milky weekend in Italy, produced by Manfrotto and Marco Tortato in Bassano on 8-9 June.

It looks like it will be our last event in Europe in summer 2013 as we are moving on…
I am happy to let you know that we will be visiting for our Milky Workshops AUSTRALIA again in November 2013!

I hope to see you there!
.

This time I thought it will be cool to approach the liquid theme in a more relaxed and funny way.
So we threw some colours into the mix and came up with a personal Milky PinUp parody and tribute to my favourites pinup style artists.

It was a lot of fun to work on these images and I am happy with the results as you never know if the liquid is actually going to work like you want and could you translate any concept into a Liquid scenario…

.
Here you can find some of the original paintings that we used as a references.

As you can see most of them were done by Gil Elvgren but there is more cool work from a talented people like Alberto Vargas or Greg Hildebrandt, to name but a few.

And the behind the scenes of the messy part of that game:

BTS photos by Thorsten Roos & Niels Walldorf

Oh, and the setup! Enjoy!

.
All together it is a really fun series and a cool change from our usual White on Black illustrations.

And yes, it very much looks like an upcoming 2014 calendar ;-)…

More illustrations can be found on our Website here >>>
And if you missed it last time, here is our BTS video on Lighting for Liquids >>>

Cheers and hope to see you in Oz!

THE TRIAL – How was it done?

The Trial – Calendar – Behind The Scenes

After publishing photographs from The Trial [ Click for Photos ], our recent conceptual shoot, I’ve received a lot of emails asking ”How was it done?” and “How on earth we managed to convince over 50 models to take part in the project!”

I will be more than happy to answer, but first I would like to thank you all for your messages and kind words, I really appreciate them all!

OK, So let’s get straight to the point!

Working around your limitation is what photography is all about really.

“Do you need a big budget to do big things..?”
– I don’t think so!

What matters is thinking outside the box and always willing to go the extra mile!

The Courtroom scene was the most challenging illustration.
We had no budget to hire over 50 models or the full house of lighting gear…

So instead I decided to Shoot in Sections.

I have prepared a little animation to give you a full understanding of what this involved:

The cameraPhase One!

For this kind of work, you want to have something which will justify the scale of your project.
And I knew I wanted the best possible output!

I decided to try the Phase One camera system, and to say that I am thrilled with the quality of the final images is not enough.
I worked with P65+ Digital Back  and I think that the resolution, quality and level of noise is just superb.
When your focus is in place you will get an extraordinary level of details and – to paraphrase my friend Drew – “the Angels sing!”

And that illustration when printed at almost 2m wide paper is just breathtaking!

[To Enlarge please click on the photo]

Now with the introduction of the new modelPhase One IQ180 Digital Back with over 80MP, and extraordinary quality and detail – they just rewrite the standards!

I hope to put my hands on the beast soon enough to shoot with it my new project – Awakening!

The Setup: Gitzo + Manfrotto

If you can manage to keep your camera locked dead tight on the tripod and keep the lighting consistent – it allows you to multiply not only models but also the lighting setups!

When working with such a camera – and the medium format is not a small body – and large groups of talents + team on the day , there are so many things around you that the least important thing to worry about is to secure the consistent output – you want to be sure that the rig keeps the frames identical.
For that you need to go for the sturdiest tripod which you can get.

We worked with Gitzo GT5660SCT Giant Tripod with a fantastic Manfrotto 405 Geared Head which allows for an absolute fine detail camera position adjustments.

To make sure you will not move anything while shooting – we tethered and operated the camera from a laptop via Phase One, Capture One software.

After all that… it is just as simple as layering final frames in Photoshop!

And other than that, there was almost no postproduction on the images.
You gotta love it, when it is all done in Camera!

Oh, and if you missed my previous post here is the complete Behind The Scenes Video from The Trial and the final photographs you can find here [click]:

Cheers
